Who knew a repair manual could be informative, easy to follow, AND fun to read? If you're on the fence It is amazing in the year that you can find useful, period information on ALL facets of how your home is heated if you have steam radiator heating. The author shows the information that was widely available years ago or so and interprets it in todays language so that a homeowner can see how all of the components work together.
In simple language, you are shown the many small steps that any homeowner can do to get that system working in the fine, original condition that it was meant to be. Buy this book NOW and you will have a warmer and probably cheaper heating season this upcoming winter! I'm 67 years old and have had to wade through many technical books over my 40 plus years in the HVAC industry.
No one writes a more interesting, easy to read, and fun--yes fun, fact filled book than Dan Holohan. If anyone wants to learn about steam heat, this is a not to miss book to read. Keep it handy for reference; you'll be grateful you did. While I would consider this book is of primary concern for professionals, it was certainly of benefit to me, Joe Homeowner. The book gave me the information to understand the overall heating system and with that understanding, the ability to troubleshoot issues which should have ultimately been routine maintenance.
Prior to reading this book, about the only thing I did was make sure the water level was where I thought it should be. During heating seasons, the boiler would often need to have water added at least once a day, sometimes even twice morning and evening. After reading this book, I've been able to address a large number of minor issues and now have a noticeable and measurable!
No more daily refills! You need this book! If you own a steam system and want to understand it, you owe it to yourself to buy this book. Especially useful for DIY types. Also has some interesting history of the evolution of steam heating. I knew more than the first couple of contractors that tried to work on my system.
