Send this topic Timber frame design using sketchup pdf download. Author Topic: A little scared to ask but Read times. I downloaded, tried to follow the tutorials, but I just don't seem to be able to wrap my head around the language and logic.

What I think should be simple isn't and what looks like a major hurdle will show up on the screen just about like it should be. I have not spent a bunch of hours with it but only want to draw up a simple shed for my sawmill and am reluctant to spend too many hours I can get a drawing from an architect but suddenly it's big bucks. I reviewed a bunch of the posts here but most seem to be help for those that understand the language. And just so I don't appear too ignorant; I'll gladly crunch numbers or balance cheque books, or audit accounts.

Just don't ask me to draw!! Any words from y'all? I've not checked out sketchup even thought I really need to. Reason is, I'm used to being forced to learn new software in order to accomplish things.

I know it can be taxing at the very least to do so and I'm not sure I have any room left in my brain for it. Just call me the midget doctor. Commercial circle sawmill sawyer in a past life.

Ezekiel Grizzly You said it very well, and is a good summary of what I have found as well. Obvious that it is fairly straight forward for some people, and they pick it up fast. But for me, there are hidden things that I timber frame design using sketchup pdf download find or grasp, and then other things that are almost like they read my mind and pop up. Go figure. I have made several attempts to just take the time and hammer it out, learn the tricks, and get something created with it.

So far, hasn't happened. So you can add me to the "inept" list. Not sure which tutorials you used, but I found Clark Bremer's youtube videos very helpful. I'd start by making some simple components 4x4s, etc and play around with them. Then move on to joinery and such. Put me on the list. I have downloaded every version since it first came out. Would love to figure it out. I can only get so far using excel.

Grrrr and laughs all at the same time!! I guess I'll just get my tutorial from them. Quote from: Grizzly on January 03,AM. Working harder than ever! I started using SketchUp about 2 years ago. I was stumbling along for a while until I had a "light bulb" moment. I was drawing and drawing parts and piece but when I tried to scale stretch one part, the entire drawing would turn into a Picasso masterpiece!

I spent about a month making a BIG mess. Then I got it this will seem really dumb to those that already know Then the most important part - double click this timber, right click and Make Component. You can name it but not necessary.

Click OK. If you don't Make Component, timber frame design using sketchup pdf download, any further drawing will stick to this timber and you will get really strange results.

Each Component can be maneuvered around and will snap to other Components if you have that set. Each Component can be opened in the Component Editor to resize and even add more to it. That's the key - once you have your "frame" built, you will go back and add the joinery tenons, birds-mouths, etc, timber frame design using sketchup pdf download.

This can be a daunting task it timber frame design using sketchup pdf download make it that way. The beauty of the Component is you can replicate copy it over and over.

Even replicate it at regular intervals, like wall studs or stair treads, timber frame design using sketchup pdf download. When you replicate a Component, what you do to one, will happen to all of them. Last but not least, SU timber frame design using sketchup pdf download only make you a 3-D model of your structure. You can make some JPGs of different views and cobble together some shop drawings, but would not be submittable to the Planning Department.

You will need to purchase a copy of SU so that you will have Layout. Layout allows you to take stored views of your drawings plans, sections, ISO views. For a permitted structure, you will need an structural engineer to review your plans and "stamp" them.

I found through FF an engineer in Mass. My structure is complicated. If you were close by, I'd give you some training I downloaded Sketchup years ago, but had to reboot in Windows every time I wanted to use it, so I never got very far.

Now, I design everything in my head and timber frame design using sketchup pdf download a calculator to figure out rafter lengths. It's much easier, and saves a lot of paper, timber frame design using sketchup pdf download.

Focus on the basics - drawing lines and surfaces and then moving them into 3d shapes. Forget the TF Rubies and joinery and all the rest until you can draw a basic timber frame - which will just be a collection of boxes that touch each other - and might have some end cuts at odd angles.

When you are comfortable making that work then you can move into the TFRubies. Otherwise I detail my joinery as needed and put callouts in my layout files for what joint is required where. In my view its a burden for most folks just getting started. It's a prosumer tool that takes some experience and skill to use. Practice timber frame design using sketchup pdf download basics.

Draw a rectangle. Make it a component. Practice stacking the boxes. Rotate the boxes. Move the boxes accurately - because all you are doing at the most basic level in SketchUp when designing timber frames is playing with boxes. Just one more data point for comparison. For me sketchup is the easy part and I eagerly gobbled up the tutorials each step of the way as I advanced.

But I did and still do have annoying frustrations from time to time. It baffles me as to why some don't get it as it is so easy compared to real timber framing. Think about it--making real wood joinery takes tremendous skill, precision, tools, timber frame design using sketchup pdf download, money, and manual labor for a start. That's something most people simply will never, ever wrap their heads around but you can do it. What I love about sketchup is I can do it over again without fear of ever wasting good wood.

I use sketchup for everything in the DIY world. It's a real game changer as it gives tremendous flexibility and sound designs I can try out, explore, and tweak before finalizing a plan, timber frame design using sketchup pdf download.

End result is quality and efficiency go way up. I first heard about Sketchup from a woodworking friend who used it to design furniture and other carpentry projects. Since then, I can't begin to tell you how many things I've used Sketchup for--from designing kitchens, cabinets, work benches, shop carts, parts, and many other various carpentry creations including timber frames. I learned some traditional drafting a long time ago, but Sketchup gives me an opportunity to change proportions and modify designs without having to redraw from scratch on paper.

A big advantage is that it gives me a chance to see things with a 3D perspective walk around it and make sure I like the proportions. That's very hard for me to visualize from standard elevation drawings. It allows me to see what the final product is going to look like and be sure I'm pleased with the design before I cut a single piece of wood.

Being able to measure accurate dimensions directly from the Sketchup drawing is also a big plus. Like everything new, there's a learning curve. I probably spend more time up front with the design now, but I'm more happy with the final product because of it. Used Sketchup to whip up this quick design
